About the Forum

One World, One Partnership

The Fifth EDCTP Forum carries the theme Fighting HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria: One World, One Partnership. This Forum presents a unique opportunity to share information and reflect not only on the investment made on products, but on personnel and populations (people) alike. Clinical research and clinical trials for poverty-related diseases, insufficiently addressed in the past but growing now, are the main priority for this forum. However for clincial trials to be conducted to the highest standards in developing countries themselves, and for the products coming out of these trials to actually be delivered through appropriate health systems, partnerships are crucial. The Fifth EDCTP Forum provides an important platform to create new partnerships and enhance existing ones by bringing together scientists at various stages of their careers, product developers, representatives from research funding organisations, policy makers and other partners.

Forum objectives
The main purpose of the Fifth EDCTP Forum will be to reflect upon the progress the Partnership has made over the sixth year of its existence including showcasing outcomes of both its research and capacity strengthening activities in sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, the programme will embrace the following objectives:

Objective 1: Increase awareness and support
The Forum seeks to promote African and European leaders’ support for research in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and increase awareness of the need for clinical trials activities in Africa

Objective 2: Exchange knowledge and promote collaboration
The Forum brings together researchers working in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria clinical trials and related disciplines to exchange scientific information and to actively encourage and promote collaboration in research and development

Objective 3: Shape a common global research agenda
The Forum fosters interaction between the European and African scientific communities, as well as partners from other regions in order to shape an effective and appropriate EDCTP research agenda

The programme
The forum programme will include a variety of high-profile speakers from both the scientific and the political realm, and will focus on advances and agenda setting for clinical research on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The programme will involve a combination of the following:

  • Keynote addresses by invited speakers
  • Plenary and parallel sessions
  • Roundtable discussions
  • Oral presentations on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa (EDCTP funded projects are particularly encouraged)
